The Ghost Town Portraits Workshop
June 19-21, 2020
Are you tired of settling for good photographs, when what you really want is great?
Whether you’ve been photographing for decades, or just started in with your new iPhone, you’ve probably noticed that there’s always room for improvement.
Perhaps you visualize stunning, artistic portraits in your head…but struggle to get your actual pictures to look as good as you’d imagined?
Do you want to light your images in a way that excites you? Are you uncomfortable using flashes on-location, or want to know the secrets to finding the best natural light?
Do you wrestle with your gear, your settings, your lights, your models, your composition…trying to juggle everything at once…fumbling to pull it all together and create something beautiful?
Do you enjoy photographing in distinctive locations, eating home-cooked food, and learning in a fun environment with like-minded people?
If so, this workshop is for you.
Three Beautiful Days of Photography and Conversation
What could be better than the tumbledown texture of a ghost town and the beauty of dancers and models, combined to create beautiful environmental portraits? In this special workshop, I’m combining two of my favorite things–historic places and beautiful faces–to teach you how to create stunning on-location portraiture.
Join me for 3 days in the John Day River Territory, just east of Portland, Oregon. Surrounded by the beautiful Painted Hills and John Day River, and thousands of years of history, we’ll gather at PJ Ranch, where I’ll share from my 30 years of experience photographing people. You’ll learn about professional lighting (natural light and off-camera flash), building rapport with subjects, posing, strong composition, good clothing choices, camera and lens options, and much more. We’ll spend two days at ghost towns hidden in the local area where I’ll give demonstration shoots. You’ll then have hours to photograph with models and dancers, with my oversight and input. I take a hands-on approach to learning by introducing you to a concept and then letting you apply it immediately, with my feedback. It’s the best way to learn.
But the workshop doesn’t end there. In the weeks following the workshop, you have the option to sign up for an additional 1-on-1 consultation, looking over your final work and giving you further insight for improvement. I want you to end up with photographic confidence, professional insight, real-life experience, and photographs you are proud of.
Why join me for one of my workshops?

- Thoughtful instruction: I’ve been teaching workshops for 20 years, in the US, Europe, Asia, and Latin America
